With the theme "Pharmacists: Meeting Global Health," this year, like every other year, World Pharmacists Day was celebrated worldwide. As part of the celebrations, the Department of Pharmacy at Rajshahi University also organized events to mark the occasion. The program was divided into two segments: a discussion session and an award ceremony.
A quiz competition was arranged for the students of the department, where participants from all batches took part. The quiz questions were based on academic textbooks and topics related to pharmacy. A total of 20 questions were asked, and the competition was completed a day prior to the main event. On the 25th of September, the discussion session and award distribution began at 3:00 PM in the Engineering Gallery of Dr. M.A. Wazed Miah Academic Building. Crest and certificates were awarded to the first and second-place winners, while certificates were given to those securing the third to eighth places.
The discussion session was presided over by the department’s chairperson, Dr. Mosha. Shahnaz Parveen, along with other faculty members who also delivered speeches. The speakers highlighted the role of pharmacists globally, as well as their contributions to Bangladesh's pharmaceutical industry. They emphasized that optimal healthcare for the population can only be achieved when doctors, pharmacists, and nurses work together like a family.
They expressed regret that hospital pharmacists have yet to be established in Bangladesh, stressing that this absence hinders the assurance of proper healthcare for the general public. The speakers also proudly mentioned the rise of the pharmaceutical industry in Bangladesh, where graduate pharmacists continue to make significant contributions. Due to the relentless hard work of pharmacists, the pharmaceutical sector now contributes around 1.8% to the country's GDP (Source: BIDA). The speakers called for the immediate implementation of hospital pharmacists in Bangladesh.
I participated in the quiz competition. Although I didn’t win any prizes, it was an experiential journey for me. The feeling was extraordinary. Each question was based on reality, allowing us to apply our thinking skills in relation to real-life situations.
Overall, the day was memorable, filled with knowledge-sharing and camaraderie. It further strengthened the relationships between senior and junior students, as well as between the students and faculty members of the department.
